Training at North Syracuse

Although the North Syracuse Fire Department is 100% Volunteer, firefighters who serve are held to very high standards.  Our firefighters are all New York State Certified Interior Class Firefighters.  Many of our firefighters have specialized training including Hazard Material Technicians, Rescue Divers, Rope Rescue Technicians, and more.  Those firefighters often serve on the Onondaga County Special Operations Teams in addition to the NSFD. All NSFD firefighters are trained in First Aid, CPR and the use of AED's via internal American Red Cross Instructors. Many firefighters at the NSFD continue their Medical Training to the EMT level and a few as high as the Paramedic Level.

Members of the North Syracuse Fire Department are expected to attend weekly training drills which are held every Tuesday at North Syracuse Station 1.  These drills combine classroom lectures with hands on practical evolutions, both designed to keep our members up to date on the latest fire service skills and techniques.  These drills are facilitated by a wide range of instructors, from our own officers to outside lecturers/instructors.

Topics include: Safety and OSHA, EMS, Engine Company Operations, Truck Company Operations, Rescue Company Operations, Rapid Intervention, Building Construction and more ...

The North Syracuse Rookie Experience

Individuals who join the NSFD with no previous firefighting experience are automatically given "blue hat" or rookie status.

Blue hats (rookies) are required to complete a NYS certified Firefighter 1 class (which we will assist you in finding and enrolling in one) within your first year of membership.  These classes are typically held at fire departments around the county, the OCC public safety training center, or the NYS Fire Academy in Montour Falls.  These classes typically meet 2 evenings a week plus some weekend days for approximately 4 months.  The conclusion of the class includes live fire evolutions at an approved training facility.

Individuals who join the NSFD with previous firefighting experience (minimum of NYS FF1) are given "black and blue" status.

In order to be given full active status or "black hat" status, all firefighters must complete the North Syracuse Core Training Classes and at the end of the training program, all member must successfully complete the NSFD training evaluations which include:
A written exam
A practical exam and
An oral exam conducted by the Chiefs.

Being a "Rookie" in any department is not easy nor is it for everyone.  In addition to the training you will receive there are many intangible things that you must manage as well.  Getting to know the people in the department, the departments operating procedures, the equipment and where it is located are just a few such things.

All Members Must Complete (Manditory) the Following Online Courses from FEMA:

ICS 100

ICS 700

In addition, it is recomended members also take:

ICS 200

ICS 800
