The Need:
The North Syracuse Volunteer Fire Department is 100% Volunteer. That means
that we depend on people just like you to give of their time to respond to
calls for help and train for those calls. The members of our department are
your friends and neighbors, people who live in the community and want to help
when you need it most.
We need people just like you to give of themselves and of their time to
provide the many services that we offer to the community. The road is not
always easy, but the reward of helping others is well worth the journey.
NSFD STATION 1 - 109 Chestnut Street
Who we are:
The North Syracuse Fire Department was established in 1913, after members of
the community saw the need for localized fire protection. Starting from humble
beginnings, the department has established itself as one of the premier fire
departments in Onondaga County. The department currently operates two stations
and 13 pieces of apparatus. In addition to our own alarms, the department
assists neighboring fire departments with personnel and equipment when
requested. North Syracuse is also one of the founding and current members of
the Onondaga County Hazardous Materials Response Team.
Who we're looking
for:
This is not for everyone. You need more than just a desire to help. You need
courage, dedication and a willingness to learn new skills and face new
challenges. And you need time for training sessions, meetings and emergency
calls. Our service is one which calls on its members to perform hot, sweaty,
dirty strenuous work, often in uncertain and hazardous environments.
Your probably saying to yourself, there is more to this than I thought. Well
you're right, but the rewards and satisfaction received from the volunteer
fire service are often beyond description. There is a sense of accomplishment
after controlling a structure fire or helping someone who was involved in a
vehicle accident and the fulfillment in teaching kids fire safety. The list
could go on and on.
The bottom line in our business is measured by how we prevent or reduce the
loss of life, pain and suffering and property damage of the people we serve.
We are here and prepared for one reason, and that is to provide service to
the people of our community.
